Author Visit to Schools
Kindergarten to Grade 6

SHELDON OBERMAN  writer, storyteller and teacher has awards for adult and children's books. He has directed his own films and  plays, written for newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. He wrote the Junior Question of Scruples, Hasbro's game of ethical questions as well as songs with Fred Penner.  He also writes Slice of Life articles for the Winnipeg Free Press.

His children's books range from historical tales such as The White Stone in the Castle Wall to fantasies such as TV Sal and the Game Show from Outer Space. He writes for the very young with Lion in the Lake; A French English Alphabet Book. He writes for older children with The Always Prayer Shawl about  the immigrant experience and The Shaman's Nephew; a Life in the Far North - tales told to him by a traditional Inuit hunter.

Sheldon offers three presentations during his visit. He  adapts to the age, size and special interests of each group. He leaves posters, teacher hand outs, a book about how books are made and autographed letters about creativity.

Rhyme a Word or Two  (K to 2)
Anyone can, even you. Songs, poems and stories to inspire students to make up their own. Lots of discussion as well

Don't Just Watch. Watch Out!  (grades 2 to 4)
    A zany trip with TV Sal and the Game Show from Outer Space.  Multimedia storytelling with student participation and a new attitude about TV along with some of his other popular stories and poems. Discussion and a surprise box of creativity.

Stories of When Our Grandparents Were Young  (grades 4 and up)
Performances of his work such as The Always Prayer Shawl, a tale of immigration and life cycle The White Stone in the Castle Wall set at Toronto's Casa Loma in 1914. The Shaman's Nephew; A Life in the Far North. Time for questions and discussion.

    A slide show exposing subliminal messages in familiar ads.

  A Question of Scruples , the junior edition - a game show format showing the ethical questions facing them each day (gr 3 and up)
